To the Community of Brookton,

Sunday 6th February was a very testing day. Our thoughts are with the communities of Bruce Rock, Corrigin, Wickepin, and those who have suffered loss. The coming days and weeks, even months, are going to be some of the most difficult for these communities. Many of you will remember all too well what that recovery will feel like.

There will be a time and place for you to help these communities. Please keep an eye out for calls for assistance and if you can help, I know it will be greatly appreciated.

To our Shire of Brookton volunteers, Thank You! Without hesitation you offered your time and skills to go and help our neighbours.

To the Volunteer Fire Fighters who will continue to help with the fire-fighting effort and clean up, Thank You.

To our Chief Bush Fire Control Officer Murray Hall, our community is blessed to have you in this role. Whilst our community was never under threat, your expertise in recognising the situation early, and your commitment to helping ,and supporting Corrigin in its time of need is truly appreciated.

To the Shire Staff, and Community Volunteers that manned the Administration Office, and the Pavilion, into the evening to enable those evacuated from Corrigin to come to a safe place, and wait for further instructions, Thank You. To those businesses, and community members who offered, and in some cases delivered, food and drinks, Thank You.

To those members of the community who late last night, came out with fuel so that we could help people to move onto the Pingelly Evacuation Centre, Thank You. Every little drop did count.

Yesterday was compounded by the power outage, and we thank the community for its patience and understanding through this period.  Western Power, have a duty to all of us to not restore power until it is safe to do so. This can be inconvenient and frustrating, but necessary.

The Wheatbelt is a great place live, work, and volunteer, and yesterday’s events demonstrate the community spirit and willingness to help our neighbours, no matter what.

Cr Katrina Crute on behalf of the Shire of Brookton Councillor’s.
