  • Nominations for local government elections open on September 2 and close on September 9
  • Community members are encouraged to consider nominating
  • Anyone intending to nominate will need to complete a free online inductions course provided by the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries

With nominations for the upcoming local government elections opening in one week, community members are encouraged to start thinking about standing for their council.

Local Government Minister John Carey said people from diverse backgrounds, in particular, should talk to family and friends about the possibility of putting their hand up and nominating.

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) launched the 'Vocal Local' campaign in August this year, in partnership with the WA Local Government Association, WA Electoral Commission and Local Government Professionals WA.

The campaign encourages people who may not otherwise consider standing for council, to think about the contribution they could make to their local community.

Local government elections take place every two years.

Anyone intending to nominate for election must first complete a free online induction course, provided by DLGSC at http://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/local-government

Nominations close on Thursday 9 September at 4pm.

Comments attributed to Local Government Minister John Carey:

"When it comes to the three tiers of government, local government is closest to the people, which means you can deliver practical changes that have an immediate positive impact on the community.

"I know there are lots of people out there who have great ideas about how to make their communities better places to live, work and do business, and standing for local government is a great way to deliver on those ideas.

"I particularly want to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to consider nominating, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, young people, those living with disabilities and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

"I firmly believe having more diversity in local government can bring enormous benefits, including better decision-making and the ability to draw on a wider range of experiences and skills.

"So if you're thinking of nominating, now is the time to sit down and have a conversation with your family and friends.

"Standing for council, and becoming a councillor, is a fantastic way to leave a lasting mark on your local community."
