MEDIA RELEASE - PRESCRIBED BURN - CUMMING STREET AND WEAM RESERVE, BROOKTON

From the Shire President - Cr Katrina Crute

To the Community,

The Department for Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) together with the Shire of Brookton, Brookton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (BVFRS) and local Bush Fire Brigades (BFB) have identified high fire fuel loads in the reserves shown below.

DFES and DPAW will be conducting controlled burns in conjunction with the BFB and the BVFRS. If you are interested in joining a BFB or the BVFRS register your interest with either a Bush Fire Brigade Caption, the Brookton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service or the Shire Administration Office, it is a good way to learn how to volunteer in a controlled situation rather than during an emergency.

To reduce the fire risk to residents and the community, a prescribed burn is scheduled for Thursday 21st May 2020. Conditions are unpredictable and the burn may be cancelled at the last minute. There is also the potential that inversion may occur that prolongs the smoke over the Townsite, but everything is being done to minimise the impact.

The local wildlife living in the reserves (Curlews) have been considered in the planning of the burn, with the burn to be conducted in such a way as to protect them as much as is possible.

Please ensure that your evaporative air conditioner is turned off during this period. It is also recommended that all doors and windows are closed to minimise the impact of smoke entering your home.

Once completed, this prescribed burn will provide increased protection for properties and community assets from an uncontrolled bushfire event.
