Over 70 residents came out to witness the first raising of the Aboriginal Flag at the Shire Administration Centre on Saturday 24 June.

Elder and Chairperson of Seabrook Aboriginal Corporation Faye Slater welcomed all in Nyungar and conducted a Welcome to Country.

Shire President Katrina Crute dedicated the flag poles to the Brookton community and acknowledged the work of Seabrook Aboriginal Corporation saying “Seabrook are a group of hardworking volunteers completing many local projects that support our whole community.  We have worked successfully together in the past and I am confident that great things can be achieved as we tread a path together with a spirit of collaboration and a focus on local issues.

Cr Crute then raised the Australian Flag on the first of the new flag poles.  This was followed by local elder ‘King’ George McGuire who had the honour of raising the Aboriginal flag.  The crowd gave a rousing cheer as the iconic flag reached the top of the pole.

Tomisha Bennell, along with Faye Slater, raised the Torres Strait Islander flag in honour of her grandfather.

An ‘indigenous twist’ morning tea followed the flag raising including kangaroo satay sticks and lemon myrtle cupcakes.

This event was funded through financial support from Department Prime Minister and Cabinet for National Reconciliation Week 2017.
